Ethics Is Engineering
At Heartwood, ethical AI isn't a disclaimer at the bottom of the page. It's a design requirement built into every tool, every dataset, and every decision we make.

Five commitments that guide every technical and business decision
Every AI model carries the biases of its training data. We audit for bias before deployment, during operation, and after updates. We document our findings and publish our methodology.
Community data belongs to the community. We encrypt at rest and in transit, never share with third parties, and give users full control to export or delete their data at any time.
We don’t ask communities to trust AI. We show how it works, what it can and cannot do, and where the risks are. Trust is earned through transparency.
Before we ask ‘what can this tool do?’ we ask ‘who could this tool harm?’ Risk assessment is part of our engineering process, not an afterthought.
When something goes wrong — and in AI, things will go wrong — there must be a human accountable. We name who is responsible, how to reach them, and what recourse exists.
AI has a physical footprint. We take that seriously.
AI infrastructure consumes enormous energy and water resources. We research and document the impact of data center proliferation on local communities — air quality, water usage, energy costs, land use, and environmental health.
We build tools that help communities visualize the environmental burden of industrial AI infrastructure in their neighborhoods, giving them data for advocacy.
We provide community-ready research, talking points, and impact data that local advocates can use in county board meetings, town halls, and public comment periods.
Specific, enforceable privacy commitments — not vague promises
All personal data is encrypted at rest and in transit
We never sell or share your data with third parties
You can export all your data at any time
You can delete your account and all associated data permanently
We use privacy-preserving analytics — no personally identifiable tracking
Our AI features process data in real-time and do not store conversation logs beyond the active session
How we test, monitor, and report on the AI tools we build
Before any AI feature ships, it undergoes equity testing across demographic groups.
We continuously monitor AI outputs for drift, bias patterns, and quality degradation.
Users can flag concerns directly. Every flag is reviewed and documented.
We publish our audit methodology and findings. Accountability requires transparency.
We welcome scrutiny. If you have questions about how we handle data, audit for bias, or assess environmental impact — ask us.
